Faculty of Medicine
The faculty provides versatile education in the field of health sciences. In addition to MD and DDS degrees, students can complete Master’s level education in nursing science, health management science, teacher education in health science and medical bioengineering.
FoM is strongly integrated with the surrounding society that awaits new discoveries suitable for innovative industries and highly educated experts. In addition to these traditional expectations, municipalities and the state also benefit from the expertise of the faculty in the organization and critical evaluation of their basic services and duties.
The research focus areas are categorized into international top-level research and promising future research areas. The first category consists of cardiovascular research and system epidemiology utilizing, among others, the Northern Finland Birth cohort data. Pediatric research has grown to be a world-class science. Strong future areas of research include medical imaging, physics and technology research, translational and environmental and respiratory research as well as ICT and health research and society- and business-oriented research. The Center for Health and Technology (CHT) is dedicated to innovating connected health solutions together with researchers and entrepreneurs by coordinating the research, development and innovation activities of the OuluHealth ecosystem.
Research is also integrated into the research groups of Medical Research Center Oulu, MRC Oulu and Biocenter Oulu. MRC Oulu is a strategic research organization of the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District and the University of Oulu offering a multidisciplinary research environment for clinical, translational and health care socioeconomic research. Biopankki Borealis constitutes part of the research conducted at the hospital.
The Infrastructure for Population Studies manages large data and sample collections collected at the Faculty of Medicine, such as the Northern Finland Birth Cohorts 1966 and 1986.
